Alpha arbutin, also known as Hyd* β-D-glucopyranoside, is a naturally occurring antioxidant and skin brightener that can have many effects on the skin:
- Reduces melanin: Alpha arbutin inhibits the tyrosinase enzyme, which is responsible for melanin production. This can help reduce the appearance of dark spots, freckles, age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
- Evens skin tone: Alpha arbutin can help improve skin texture and calm uneven complexions. It can also help reduce the degree of skin tanning after UV exposure.
- Lightens skin: Alpha arbutin can help lighten skin tones and give the skin a more radiant glow.
- Reduces wrinkles and fine lines: Alpha arbutin can help decrease the appearance of fine lines.
- Moisturizes skin: Alpha arbutin can help protect and nourish dry and scaly skin.

alpha-Arbutin, or α-arbutin, is a glycosylated hyd*, and an anomer of the naturally occurring arbutin. α-Arbutin is used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for its skin lightening effects, treatment of hyperpigmentation, and as a safer alternative to hyd*.
Alpha arbutin is generally safe for all skin shades and is less irritating than other skin-whitening treatments. It's also well-tolerated by people with sensitive skin and doesn't make the skin more sensitive to the sun.
Alpha arbutin acts by reducing tyrosinase activity, which reduces the formation of melanin in your skin. Reduced tyrosine and melanin levels decrease pigmentation and dark patches and ensure a more even appearance. Alpha arbutin reduces age spots, acne scars, and post-blemish redness.
Alpha arbutin is a natural skin brightener from bearberry; an edible red berry that is a favourite food of bears. It can lighten the appearance of hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme in skin known as tyrosinase.
Since tyrosinase is needed for melanin synthesis, alpha arbutin can visibly lighten freckles, age spots, and improve overall evenness of skin tone. Alpha arbutin is considered a safe and gentle naturally derived ingredient.
Alpha arbutin can take up to two months for visible effects to take place, so consistency is key.
