Tribulus is a perennial herb that grows in the subtropical regions of eastern and western Asia, southern Europe, and Africa. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine and in Ayurveda for chest pain, heart-related problems, dizziness, skin and eye disorders, to expel kidney stones, and as a diuretic and tonic. It is also marketed as a dietary supplement to enhance sexual function and for body building .
Tribulus terrestris is an annual plant with a basally branched, prostrate, light brown stem.1.5-5 cm long, leaflets 6-14,opposite,
rectangular, 6-15 mm long and 2-5 mm wide, apically acute or obtuse, base slightly oblique, suborbicular, entire.Flowers small, yellow, solitary leaf axils;Pedicel short;Sepals 5, persistent;Petals 5,Stamens 10, basal disc, base with scaly glands.The fruit was composed of 5 segmented petals, each with 1 pair of long and short spines.Abaxial surface has short bristle and nodular protuberance.
It is adapted to thrive in dry climate locations in which few other plants can survive.
It is native to warm temperate and tropical regions in southern Eurasia and Africa. It has been unintentionally introduced to North America and Australia. An aggressive and hardy invasive species, T. terrestris is widely known as a noxious wee*d because of its small woody fruit - the bur - having long sharp and strong spines which easily penetrate surfaces, such as bare feet or thin shoes of crop workers and other pedestrians, the rubber of bicycle tires, and the mouths and skin of grazing animals.
